All along the coast of California you will find beach after beach after beach, all with cute little seaside towns, selling seashells and small souvenirs (some even try to sell you bottled sand from their own beach), but one that could potentially be deemed the cutest, most understated town in Southern California is Seal Beach. Sitting just over the edge of Los Angeles county, and resting in the delightful Orange county, Seal Beach is a small yet special place perfect for that weekend getaway that everyone needs at least once in a while. Even though most Californians have the good life with sunshine, surfing, swimming, and sand, they too would even find this little hide away a perfect retreat.
With a postcard worthy beach, full of the whitest sand that I have seen in all of America, and crystal clear water that was of course just the right temperature, this place could instantly put a smile on anyone’s face. Sitting back and enjoying the sound of the small waves crashing in and the smell of salt wafting through the air, I could have easily imagined myself moving into one of the many beachfront houses, without even thinking about how much one of them would cost. With the sand beneath my feet it is hard to even focus on anything other than the relief I feel when I am close to the sea.
Just up from the beach is the main street that has the sweetest little nick knack stores full of trinkets and beach themed items, alongside antique stores where you can find almost everything that is related to Seal Beach and California, from old photographs and postcards, to memorabilia from stores past. Along this street is where you will also find a bath and soap shop, that carries the scent of its products all throughout the area. With bath bombs flavoured like the scent of sunshine and the seaside, and candles scented to smell like Seal Beach and all of its neighbouring areas, it is a very uplifting store, with the kindest owners who gifted me one of their original candles. Further along the street you can find bookstores, florists, and even a psychic if you are in the mood for a good fortune telling. This is also the spot to grab a bite to eat, whether that’s from one of the many Irish Pubs, the sandwich shop for a burger, or even just an ice cream that would be the cherry on top of this already perfect place.
Stepping back towards the ocean you can stroll along the wooden pier and gaze down below at the swimming fish, enjoying the sun’s rays, and the fresh air that is a compulsory for a weekend getaway. Seal Beach Pier (that has unfortunately has recently been damaged by a fire), is a unique site, contrasted with many of the Californian piers that have been updated to concrete and cement over the years, this wooden pier retains its charm and character that only adds to the appeal of Seal Beach. This is definitely the place to appreciate the sun and water, and to relax even if for just a small period of time.
