Where to find the best Veggie and Vegan Restaurants in Zurich

Zurich would have to be one of my favourite cities in all of Europe, although small it has this amazing atmosphere and culture that is so easy to sink into. I don’t often find cities where I can see myself settling down in, but Zurich is definitely a contender, if you don’t take into account the extremely expensive prices, and a major factor that appeals to me is the overwhelming options for vegetarian and vegan eateries in the city. Sometimes travelling around the world it is difficult to find veggie restaurants, and even harder to find vegan, but Zurich is one of the few places I’ve found in Europe that is really focused and passionate about this increasingly popular way of eating, which is somewhat surprising when you take a look at their traditional cuisine as it is highly centred around meat and cheese, and let’s not forget about the chocolate. While you can still find an abundance of restaurants serving the classic foods of Switzerland, it was a pleasant surprise to not only see so many vegetarian selections, but to see a lot of them really crowded at any time of the day. Below are just a couple of my favourite finds in the city that I would highly suggest if you ever find yourself in Zurich.

Hiltl

Located: Sihlstrasse 28, 8001 Zürich

Hiltl is one of the most popular restaurants in Zurich and currently holds the Guinness World Record for being the oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world! It first opened its doors in 1898, and has only expanded since then. With numerous locations all around the city, the original still stands at Sihlstrasse and is continuously busy during lunch and dinner hours. It is a buffet style that offers a lot of seasonal vegetables, Indian inspired dishes, salads, desserts, etc. and has prospered so much that many other restaurants have opened up in that same buffet style. The food is absolutely incredible. Fresh products and unique recipes add up to be some of the most delicious foods you will ever eat.

Elle ‘n’ Belle

Located: Limmatstrasse 118, 8005 Zürich

It’s vegan baby! Opened by two sisters and has won many awards including Swiss Vegan Award Best of the Best, this al a carte restaurant is constantly busy, so make sure to book in advance! With a cool rock ‘n’ roll vibe and inspired menu it is a difficult decision to choose what to order. Though their ice tea is a must, and if you’re a meat eater, or travelling with a meat eater their soy burgers (make sure to try the bagel burger) are incredible, I swear you cannot tell that it isn’t real meat. Mood lighting gives the restaurant a great atmosphere for that pre evening out meal.

Saftlade

Located: Münstergasse 31, 8001 Zürich

A smaller cafe style serving small meals, but the real highlight here is their juices and smoothies. Freshly made each day, with different flavours frequently hitting the menu, you’re sure to be left satisfied. My personal favourite is the cinnamon and banana smoothie made with almond milk, that had just the right about of ingredients to please my afternoon peckishness.

Tibits

Located: Seefeldstrasse 2, 8008 Zürich

Probably my favourite restaurant in Zurich, Tibits has that same buffet style that Hiltl began, but focused more on lots and lots of veggies rather than international cuisine. With seasonal foods on offer, think carrots, cabbage, pumpkin, and potato of all sorts during the fall, the buffet is just covered in warm colours. I stacked my plate high and still couldn’t fit everything that I wanted on it, there is just too many options here! Tibits also offers free tap water, something that is hard to find in Europe.

SamSes

Located: Langstrasse 231, 8005 Zürich

Another favourite for locals, SamSes offers both a buffet and al a carte, with specialty soy meat products. This casual restaurant is a little cheaper than Hiltl or Tibits, though not as centrally situated as them, it is located in the trendy Zurich West with a great night life scene.

Juice Market

Located: Augustinergasse 42, 8001 Zürich

Although not a completely vegetarian restaurant, this is probably the most organic cafe in all of the city. With both meat and vegan options centred mostly around Mediterranean cuisine, their products are delivered daily so you are guaranteed a fresh meal. But the juices are the real winner here. With no sugar and plenty of vitamins and minerals it is the perfect balance to give you that boost.

The Sacred

Located: Müllerstr. 64, 8004 Zurich

Now time for dessert. The most important part of any meal. The Sacred has some of the best vegan ice cream you will ever eat, and with so many flavours. While most fruity gelatos are dairy free, here you can find even the most scrumptious of tastes from hazelnut to chocolate, or if ice cream isn’t your thing there are plenty of pastries and cakes to indulge in. The Sacred prides itself on being completely organic and appreciates all things nature, so everything here is very healthy, if you don’t take into account the sugar content.
